Sur Place is the title I gave, during the 2000s, to a series of site-specific cello compositions. The instrument served as a pretext for urbex.
Three recordings made between 2004 and 2007 were released on now-defunct net labels. Sur Place #1 was recorded in a disused oil refinery tank; Sur Place #2 in the ice cellars of a former brewery; and Sur Place #3 in the basement of a Swedish furniture store construction site...
In each case, the cello was used to reveal the sonic, architectural, and harmonic space, searching for resonant frequencies or moving the instrument through the space, then mixing the recordings by layering continuous sounds.
