Les Maîtres Silencieux

film by Naïs Van Laer - 2018

Les Maîtres Silencieux (The Silent Masters) is a documentary essay that questions our relationship with animality through two initiatory journeys. That of a young wolf who crosses France in search of territory, and that of Cindy, a young amateur taxidermist fascinated by animals and death, who learns to bow hunt.
Caught up in their quest, Cindy and the wolf will evolve in parallel. While Cindy explores wild forests and must draw on her own animality to find the predator within herself, the wolf will be forced to deal with human infrastructure. Together, they will have to learn to hunt alone and find their place in this world.

This feature film by Naïs Van Laer was the occasion for our first collaboration. I worked on the sound during filming and post-production. One of the specific challenges of the film was to reconstruct the sound perception and presence of the wolf, which, in The Silent Masters, is filmed with a subjective camera.
